Pets to the USA from the UK
What are the quarantine procedures?
There is no quarantine when entering the US, providing all of the documents are prepared accurately. Which is why it is a good idea to employ a pet travel company to assist!
Pets must have seen a licenced veterinarian within ten days of travel and be examined and confirmed ‘fit to fly’. The vet should provide the pet with a letter confirming this for the authorities on arrival in the US.
Is it the same process for the whole of the US?
We recommend that all pets are vaccinated against Rabies before travel. This isn’t mandatory for all states, but as a precaution, we recommend it to keep your pet safe
Is it the same process for all pets?
Exotic pets may require additional paperwork including CITES certificates and special export health certificates issued by APHA here in the UK
What considerations go into choosing an airline?
When selecting an airline for your pet, we like to go with airlines that have lots of experience transporting pets. We want them to be fully trained to IATA standards. Virgin, BA and United are great for getting pets to all destinations around the US. We also consider departure and arrival times, ensuring customs offices will be available on arrival so you can be reunited with your pet as soon as possible. In order to be able to accept pets for carriage, the aircraft must be fitted out with a compartment that is heated and pressurised to the exact same conditions that the human passengers experience. We will always choose a route and an airline that has this in place.
Pets from the USA to the UK
There is no quarantine for pets arriving from the US into the UK as long as all their paperwork is in order, and they have completed the relevant veterinary work.
Both dogs and cats need to have been microchipped prior to a Rabies vaccination are administered. Post Rabies vaccination pets must wait a minimum of 21 days before they can travel. This will need to be delivered by a licensed veterinarian.
Dogs will also need to have been given a tapeworm treatment no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (5 days) before they enter the UK. The treatment must be approved for use in the country it’s being given in and contain praziquantel or an equivalent proven to be effective against the Echinococcus multilocularis tapeworm. This must be administered by a licenced veterinarian.
Lastly, a Health certificate will need to be issued to confirm your pet meets the requirements and that he/she is fit to travel. This document must then be endorsed by the USDA before take off!
